Not being fast enough to join a running group is one of the most common misconceptions among new runners. As a matter of fact you don't need to be fast, you just need to show up. 

If you've ever thought about joining a run group but talked yourself out of it because you think you might be too slow, you're not a 'real runner', or you'd hold people back, you're not alone. These concerns are the most common barriers that people face when looking to join a running group, and it's exactly why we created the Up & Running Social Run Group (SRG). SRG is a free, weekly 5K running group that caters to all abilities and starts from your local Up & Running store. It's open to everyone, costs nothing to join, and no one gets left behind. 

What Is a Social Run Group?

A Social Run Group is a free, community-led running group that meets once a week to run a 5K, starting from your local Up & Running store. There are no limits, no fitness tests, and no pressure - just a group of like-minded people heading out on a run together. 

Every run has a run leader at the front and a back marker at the rear, so the group always stays together. Runners at the front loop back to keep everyone together, and we stop at regular points to regroup. Our key objective is simple - nobody runs alone, and nobody feels like they're struggling at the back, because there is no back of the pack! 

We have groups running at 19 locations across the UK, and there's a good chance there's an SRG near you. Find your nearest Up & Running store and see if they have a weekly SRG here

Who Are Our Social Run Groups For?

The short answer is: everyone!

SRG was created with beginners in mind, but it welcomes runners at every stage, from people who have never run outside before, to those returning after a break, to those regular runners who fancy some company on their weekly miles.

What To Expect On Your First Run:

Your first step is to get yourself registered at your local Up & Running store before your first run. It'll only take you a couple of minutes and you'll be given your own SRG card, which you'll need to scan at the start of each run to track your attendance. 

On the evening of the run, head down to your local store at the scheduled time (these can be found on each store's page on our website here). You'll be met by a run leader who'll brief the group on the 5K route before you set off. The pace is kept relaxed and sociable, so you should be able to hold a conversation throughout

One thing worth knowing about is our SRG rewards programme is designed to keep you motivated, with incentives for every milestone you hit. 

What Are The Benefits Of Running With A Group?

Running with others changes a lot more than you probably think. Here's why:

You'll run further that you initially think. When a conversation flows, the mileage passes quicker. A lot of new runners are often surprised by how much easier a 5K feels when they're not clock watching. 

Become part of something. SRG isn't just a run, it's a community and a place to feel valued. Members motivate each other, celebrate all the wins whether they're big or small, and often friendships are formed. That's what keeps people coming back week after week.

Motivation will actually stick around. It's far easier to get your trainers on and go out running when you know people are expecting you to. The accountability of the group is one of the most powerful tools for building a consistent running habit.

FAQs

Is SRG really free? Yes! it is completely free as there is no membership fee or joining cost. All you need to do is register at your local store. 

How far do you run? The core SRG run is always 5K. Some groups may offer longer distances, but the weekly run is always 5K.

Do I need to be fit to join? Not at all. SRG is designed for all abilities, including beginners. If you need to walk at points, that's absolutely fine and many people do! 

Will I hold the group back? No. There isn't a back of the pack position and there will always be a run leader at the front and a back marker at the rear. The group regroups regularly throughout the run, and runners at the front of the group will loop back to ensure that nobody gets left behind. 

Do I need to register in advance? Yes, you will need to register once at your local Up & Running store before your first run. After that, you'll just need to bring along your SRG card each week.
