Richard: began running in 1999 to get fit ... and has since completed 11 marathons (London and NY) and numerous half marathons as well as the Lanzarote International Running Challenge in which he has come 4th in 2007 and won his age catagory in 2006. Last year he ran a PB of 2h42:11 at London. He has a 5km PB of 15.59, half marathon of 1.11 and a 33 minute 10km. His favourite wavers between London and Berlin marathon (Berlin may have it due to free beer at finish). His favourite inspirational reading is "It's not about the bike" by Lance Armstrong and "3.59.4 The quest to break the 4 minute mile" by John Bryant. His technical expertise in shoe fitting is as unstoppable as his desire to run.

Darran Bilton has represented Great Britain in many international marathons; he was the 3rd Briton in the 2003 London Marathon & has won countless races including the Nottingham Marathon and the Millennium Bridge 5k. His longevity in athletics has singled him out as an inspiration to fellow runners of all standards. He is a qualified U.K. Athletics coach and can advise on training, nutrition and injury prevention.
Having a career in the sport spanning over 28 years, you would be forgiven for thinking the 43 year old's many achievements all hail from the past. Yet amazingly, his most impressive achievements are much more recent. He was the first 'Master Athlete Over 40' in the 2008 London Marathon and was part of the winning Club team in the same race. Also in 2008, he was part of the National Cross Country Championships & National Road Relays winning teams. In February he was first Briton in the European Clubs Cross Country Championships, in Istanbul. After a great run at London in 2009, Darran is doing this year's marathon for the multiple sclerosis resource centre - support him here www.justgiving.com/Darran-Bilton.
To hear him enthuse about the benefits of sport allows an incite into Darran's Corinthian attitude: "Yes, it's great to do well... it gives me an excuse to go out for a run!"

Andy is our newest member of staff and comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience. A former track runner with CITY OF YORK AC, Andy is now setting his sights on pastures new and venturing into 10km and half marathons and the possibility of a marathon in 2011. Also a keen and talented musician Andy can be seen up and running with his guitar in the various music venues in and around York. Andy is currently training for Wetherby 10km, Leeds half marathon and possibly the Nottingham marathon next year.

Glycerin

Brooks Glycerin 8

With the Glycerin 8, Brooks have introduced their new DNA which together with BioMoGo, the DNA speads the pressure in the best way possible in that it adjusts itself to meet your personal needs. If it is maximum cushioning you are after then this is the shoe for you. It is suitable for anything from 5km up to marathon plus distance. Coming in at 357g it is a good weight for such a cushioned shoe. It has stayed at £95 which a good price point for such a high level shoe. As with all Brooks shoes it is very hard wearing and ideal for marathon training battering round the streets.

310

Inov-8 Flyroc 310

This is a well cusioned off-road shoe, that goes beyond trail running. It is equally at home whilst Nordic Walking on trails as it is on the fells or on forest trails. I've worn them on runs from Pickering, through the fields (pretty muddy!) into Dalby Forest and along trails, both slippery and hard packed surfaces. To summarise, the Flyroc 310 is a well cusioned, versatile off road shoe that offers good protection over distance. With a broad fit and fantastic grip, it dries quickly when wet (due to its high wicking upper) and is suitable for events such as off road marathons

OMM 25l

OMM CLASSIC 25L

This is great as either a race pack or simply when travelling to races. It has a whistle for safety if out on the fells in bad weather on the shoulder strap. It has the option for holding a bladder (sold separately) and two side pockets for the option of holding two bottles. It is nice and light in weight and will stay firm and not move around while running that other brands packs cause iritation. It has a lean weight of 600g and 725g when full. It comes in at £55 which is a bargain considering the quality. A Duo-Mat is included (an 80cm sleeping mat).

Local Runs

Richard has plotted a 10k training route at WalkJogRun.net, click here.

Skeldergate Bridge

A great area to run in York is just by the river. Starting just by Cliffords Tower you can cross over the road by the river onto a foot / cycle path, hidden by an avenue of trees, you can follow this path (provided it's not flooded of course) for about 1 mile. You can then cross the Millenium bridge and either follow the foot / cycle path to the race course area which can take in any number of routes and distances including a clear route all the way to Selby (roughly 14 miles, for anyone doing marathon training). Alternatively you can take a right along Terry Avenue which runs the full length of this side of the river. For added km / mile you can take in Rowntree Park. Just be careful of slipping on geese & duck desposits while circling the pond or you might find yourself doing an aquathon. You can then exit the park area back onto Terry Avenue where you can join Skeldergate bridge back over river back to Cliffords Tower. This loop will nicely come in at around 5km. A lovely traffic free route (which is no easy task in York) and largely well lit for dark winter evenings.
For more options in the area why not try goodrunguide.co.uk, for a very reasonable price of £10 a year, you can access this fairly new site for good routes, plotting your own runs, all accurately measured.
Happy Running!
