UP & RUNNING Manchester, in the Triangle, offers a great range of running shoes, clothing, and accessories; and friendly and expert advice from our great team:

Ben has a wealth of experience from 13 years of competitive running for Blackburn Harriers. He races on track and cross country, but his main focus is on road races. He's also a UK Athletics Level 2 coach. Notable PB's are in 10k: 29:38, Half Marathon: 66:38, Marathon: 2 hrs 20
Joe achieved marathon and half marathon PB's in 2009 and hopes to better those times again in 2010. Currently training off road as he's supporting a Bob Graham Round attempt in the summer. Away from running he enjoys mountain and road biking, and the outdoors.
Hannah began running for fitness 3 years ago and have since run several half marathons. She also enjoys cycling and horse riding when she can.
John loves fell running and the longer runs. Has competed in the OMM (formally the KIMM) including the soggy Lakes one, (and no my car was fine), and the Saunders even winning his class in the latter! Will be entering the Rab event later in the year for the first time to help improve nav skils. When not racing enjoys running over his local hills of the Dark Peak (Kinder) and travelling up to the Lakes and training for the Bob Graham. Also enjoys racing the train, for fun, up Snowdon. When he's away from home roads are fine and has completed a few marathons with a best time of 2:52.
Owen is a sports enthusiast with Rugby Union being his main sport of choice for the past 3 years. Really enjoying his running and uses it as a main source of fitness for rugby although he aims to concentrate on it more during pre-season and hopes to partake in more events this year.

Running shoes with the right cushioning and support for you will make training and racing easier.
Take the guesswork out of buying your next pair - a few minutes on the treadmill and the help of our knowledgable staff is all it takes. (Please bring along your current running shoes for comparison.)

Suunto T3 - Review by Ben

Suunto T3

It can be quite daunting when looking to purchase a Heart Rate Monitor, especially if spending between £100 - £180. The Suunto T3 is one of the more stylish models on the market and boasts a range of additional features such as Training Effect, compatibility with foot-pods, GPS pods and an ANT stick.
The first thing I will mention is the comfort of the heart rate belt. All there is in the middle is a small plastic disc, which clips the strap together, the rest of it is a very comfortable and pliable fabric, a million miles away from those horrible belts you hire in gyms! Better still, the belt and watch can be replaced manually with a standard battery.
The Training Effect feature is something I would highly recommend for runners of any level to make use of and get the most out of their training. It has a gauge from 1.0 to 5.0, which measures the effect of the training session on the individual, an example would be roughly 4.0 for an average HR of 85% for an hour. This is a great tool to monitor if a session has been over-cooked, if one has a reading close to or at 5.0, then it would be wise to cut back on the next session! Equally a reading of 1.5 would be an example of a session lacking in intensity to provide any improvement.
The T3 can be more than just a heart rate monitor, it can sync with an optional foot-pod or GPS pod (available separately or in a package at £180). The foot-pod is quite slimline, (although slightly larger than Garmin's) and will give readings of pace and distance to within 98% accuracy when calibrated, it streams information during the run more effectively than GPS. The GPS pod is a little cumbersome in my opinion and eats up two AAA batteries within ten hours! It is slightly more accurate than the foot-pod, and it has a nifty clip device to attach to a belt or strap on a rucksack, which I find preferable to wearing on my arm.
Information from the T3 can easily be uploaded onto a computer (only works with OS 10.5 Mac's with movestick application) via the ANT stick, which is available separately. The Training Manager software is included, dating workouts and displaying during and Training Effect on charts and graphs.
I would recommend thoroughly reading the manual before use, as the interface can seem complex at first, but it's very effective once understood. All in all this is a fantastic heart rate monitor for the price (£110 stand-alone, £180 with dist. Pod) and it has been been a great tool for my training over the past twelve months.

Saucony Fastwitch 2 (£60) – Ben

Fastwitch

This is a race shoe I have used many times over the past 12 months and has been a mainstay for my marathon and half marathon races, as well as speed sessions.
The fit is very similar to most shoes in the Saucony range, nice and snug at the midfoot with a slightly wider forefoot area.
The shoe is very light weight with some mild support under the instep, which makes it a more suitable option than their “Type A” model for runners who overpronate and require a racing flat.
The cushioning is very adequate and holds up well against its contemporaries ie, Brooks ST Racer. As for durability? Most racing shoes only offer half the mileage you'd expect from a training shoe, I've had a good 250 – 300 miles out of mine and they aren't quite finished yet.
The Fastwitch is ideal for experienced marathon runners, but it may be a little minimal if running for a longer duration than 3 hours, it's a cracking shoe for 10K and Half-marathon races. It's also useful for younger club runners who may prefer something more substantial and versatile for track sessions than a spike shoe.
The soft inner lining also makes this a viable option for triathletes, as they can be worn without socks – although, I would only recommend this for runners who are familiar in doing so.
For heavier runners, or for 3+ hour marathon runners, the Grid Tangent may be a slightly better option.

Thorlos Experia Socks - Review by Martin

The new Experia sock follows the same principal as their regular crew sock in providing substantial padding with a flat seamed toe section. In the past Thorlos socks have compromised on a light-weight feel for superior comfort, but the Experia is much sleeker thanks to the patented Thorlo Pads, which are situated in the heel and forefoot (rather than throughout the whole sock as in the past). The rest of the material throughout the sock is very thin and light-weight, providing optimal wicking and giving the runner a race-sock feel, whilst being padded enough to be substantial over long training runs and events (half-marathons and beyond). The Experia also have an elasticated feel, which makes the sock more fitted around the foot.
I have been very impressed in the two months I have used them and they are currently my sock of choice for long runs, especially in warmer conditions.

FAQ - some common questions answered

Do I have to book for a gait analysis?
No!  Gait analysis is available Mon-Sat 10am – 5:30pm, Sundays 11am – 4:30pm
What is gait analysis?
'Gait' is basically the scientific name for walking!  A gait analysis therefore is the analysis of your walking pattern.  This is done by recording your gait whilst you walk or run on a treadmill.  We have a computer programme which then allows us to analyse your gait while you watch!
Is gait analysis free?
Yes when you are looking to buy shoes!
How long does gait analysis take?
Gait analysis itself is a relatively short process, but you need to allow yourself 30mins to have the analysis and try on the shoes recommended to you.
What is the average price of your shoes?
The average price of shoe in the shop is £75, although we do have shoes at £60 and others up to £130!
What is the difference between a neutral shoe and a stability shoe?
A stability shoe has a section on the inside of the shoe made from a stronger material. This resists the floor when you walk and stops you from rolling in if you are an over-pronator.
What is your returns policy?
We recommend that you first try the shoes on a treadmill or wear them around the house for a few days. Any problems then come back into the store. It is very difficult to exchange shoes which have been worn outside, but we always do our best for the customer!
How long does a pair of shoes last?
All shoes are designed to stand up to around 500 miles worth of running. This means that depending on how often and how far you run, a pair of shoes will last around 6 - 12 months. It is important to renew your shoes, as they will lose their cushioning and technical function.
Can I wear my trail shoes on the road?
Trail shoes and fell shoes are specifically designed for paths, grass or muddy terain. Wearing trail or fell shoes on the road will mean wearing away the tread of the shoe very quickly and is not recommended. If you run on the road, get a road shoe!
Do you sell gift vouchers?
Yes! We sell gift vouchers of any quantity, an ideal gift!
