Up & Running's Road To London | Team Line Up | Part 2

The countdown to the 2025 London Marathon has begun, and here at Up & Running, our dedicated team is gearing up for one of the most iconic marathon events in the running calendar.

In our Road to London campaign, Up & Running team members Viv, Sarah, Dan, Iain, Carmel, and Christian are training hard to take on the iconic marathon. We’ll be sharing their training tips, challenges, and personal milestones as they prepare for race day. Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or just starting out in the world of running, follow their journey for inspiration and expert advice for the ultimate test of endurance with one of the most incredible support crowds.

Iain, Up & Running Chester

Taking on London for what could be the 10th time, the start line awaits for another time round! With many years of experience, here are a few of my top tips for taking on 26.2 miles and how to navigate the day itself.

Favourite running kit is:

  • Puma Deviates
  • Pressio Compression tights
  • Lock laces for triathlons
  • Polar Vantage watch

Top tips for the London marathon

  • Get to the expo early, Saturday especially as it gets super busy!
  • Try out your race day kit before the day to make sure it's comfortable over a long distance
  • Look at the race guide to nail your nutrition strategy (there's lots on the course)
  • Organise specific places to see your supporters and meet them afterwards as the crowds get busy early and the phone signal... not the most reliable on the day
  • Look at the forecast and make sure to have something to wear prior to the start for the conditions - old t-shirts and bin bags don't go a miss...
  • Don't go off too fast... 26.2 miles is a long way, preserve your energy

Carmel, Up & Running Bournemouth

I am running London again this year....for the 8th time! I did my first marathon back in 2009 for the charity Shelter, and I've been hooked ever since!. I have completed more trail marathons over the past few years, but the draw of London always calls me back, and for as long as I can qualify with GFA times, I will endeavour to run it!

For 30 years, I had a career in the Police and running was a way to relieve the tension, anxiety and pressure that would often build up for me. Endurance running gave me an opportunity to set aside the pressures of work or family, and would settle my mind and body, leaving me stronger, more resilient and more able to face the challenges.

I now live and breathe all things running-related! at Up & running in Bournemouth. Encouraging and inspiring others embarking on this challenge, and I especially love this season where we get many runners coming into the shop who are preparing for their first marathon. It's a privilege to share my experiences of this iconic event, and share tips about anything from clothing, nutrition and the inevitable.......toilets!

Some marathon tips from me....

  • Preserve your legs on Saturday, try to avoid hours walking around, visiting the city and the expo a couple days before is always handy!
  • Don't change anything for race day, including the meal the night before! Keep your routine that worked for your long runs with your breakfast, take your own to stay confident
  • Wear you favourite running kit that you've been training in, so you feel good, look good, and hopefully run that way too
  • Post marathon can feel rough, pack a hairbrush, wet wipes, lip balm in your kit bag as well as fresh clothes and shoes (a pair of recovery slidiers work best!)  so when you meet your friends and family after, they'll think you look amazing and will say "you don't look like you've just run a marathon!!"
  • Soak up the atmosphere, love every minute of it and enjoy yourself!

Christian, Up & Running Cambridge

I'm running London alongside my 2 siblings to raise money to adapt my siblings wheelchair - https://www.gofundme.com/f/sponsor-us-in-the-london-marathon-to-adapt-lous-wheelchair

We're being supported on this journey by Altra who are giving us kit to train in and for race day as part of their TeamLDN project.

Good luck and see you in London!

As our team continues on the Road to London, we wish good luck to everyone taking in the iconic London Marathon. Stay tuned for more updates and join us in supporting Viv, Sarah, Dan, Iain, Carmel, and Christian as they prepare for race day. See you in London!
