How To Keep Running Through Winter

You have the running bug, so stay positive when the weather is wintery and there is snow on the ground.

Here are our tips to keep going through the winter months

With the right shoes and a bit of creativity then, whatever the weather, you can keep running. Rely on trail shoes to help give you that all-important extra grip through snow, sleet, mud and woodland.

As the terrain in winter often makes running hard, be prepared for it to feel different. So perhaps make your route a bit shorter, start with smaller strides to warm up and test the ground, and be ready to embrace the challenging conditions.

Tough training will stand you in good stead for when the warmer, drier weather returns.

If it is snowy or the roads are iced up, consider changing your usual routes for grassy areas which will be safer than icy pavements.

Runners build resilience and tenacity by preserving through training and never more so when training in poor weather.

Don't be put off by the bad weather - just be prepared to make some adjustments to your kit so you stay safe.

What do you need to include in your winter running wardrobe?

It is important to keep the torso warm, to protect the vital organs. Layering your clothing is an effective way to keep warm, and, it gives you the flexibility to shed a layer if it’s not as cold as you originally thought. Look for technical running clothing with good moisture-wicking properties.

Wearing a decent base layer under a t-shirt and topping off with a waterproof jacket that you can tie around your waist if you get too warm is a good start.

  • A baselayer: It needs to be long-sleeved, moisture-wicking and breathable. Such as the Craft Active Extreme 2.0 or Essence LS tee, the Ronhill LS Tech tee or the Revive Tech tee.
  • A waterproof jacket: A fully waterproof jacket will protect you in the worst conditions. For the ultimate top layer, look for a jacket that is waterproof and breathable. The GHST waterproof jacket or Ronhill Gore-Tex jacket will both serve you well.

  • Running tights: Even the hardiest of souls need to keep those hamstrings, quads, and calves warm. The men’s Craft Core Essence tight or 2XU MCS Run Compression tight would both work well in inclement weather. Wear on their own or with shorts over the top. For ladies, the Craft Urban run tight has good reflectivity and zips at the ankle or 2XU Mid-rise compression tights in a gorgeous blue print will not only look stylish, but with a wide waistband will be really comfortable too. All will see you nicely through to spring and beyond.
  • Waterproof socks: For the amount of mud that is created at this time of year, and especially with the heavier footfall on rural footpaths, wet feet are an inevitability of winter running. Run smart with an investment in waterproof socks which will keep your feet warm and dry throughout the longest of runs and deepest of puddles.
  • Hat & Gloves: Keep the warmth in with a hat and protect your hands with gloves. Ronhill Wind Block gloves will stop your fingers from perishing or the Ronhill Nightrunner gloves will keep you warm and make you visible in low light conditions. Stop the warmth from escaping through the top of your head with a Ronhill Classic Beanie or if you prefer a peaked cap, the Ronhill Split Air Lite cap has a foldable peak so it will be easy to put away on the run if you get too warm.
Most of all enjoy the unpredictability of our British weather, and, take control with the right gear to protect you and keep you safe.
