We are UP & RUNNING in Newcastle: come and see our great running shop on the third floor at Fenwick!

Meet the team ...
Staff photo Phil has been a member of Aurora Harriers since 2004, a small but very social running club based at Birtley, who always enjoy a good pint after a 'hard' Thursday training session. Before that Phil spent 12 years in the Armed Forces and is currently serving in the TA as a Physical Training Instructor (PTI). He enjoys road running in the summer, the cross-country Harrier League in the winter and also does a bit of trail running all year round. Phil's favourite race is the 14 mile Northumberland Coastal Run from Beadnell to Alnmouth, a great run, "apart from the dry sand finish!"
Jak has been running for 8 years now and runs for Gateshead Harriers. He has represented county and Newcastle city and enjoys running in the National League 1 over 400 metres; and holds a Level 2 athletic sprint coach qualification.
Jonathan has been running for just over 2 years and doing triathlon for the past year. He is currently a member of Jarrow & Hebburn AC and NE31 Tri club. He is training for sprint & olympic distance triathlons, 5 and 10K road races and possibly a marathon sometime in the near future.
James joined the team in April 2010 working part time whilst studying a Bsc Sports Science degree at Northumbria University. He is level 2 gym instructor qualified and regularly attends the gym. He runs recreationally enjoying road running 5km, 10km and in 2009 he ran the Great North Run.

Powerbar 80% Protein Plus Recovery

Any well structured training programme, designed to give an athlete continued progressive improvement should be created to maximise recovery potential. The emphasis is all about quality; quality training workload, quality recovery and quality nutrition. You don't want those gains that you have worked tirelessly towards going to waste; if you put out quality in your workouts you must put quality products back into your body. Powerbar recovery shakes are the most convenient, fastest acting products available on the market. Protein content is a mixture of milk and whey to give fast and slow acting protein to give both immediate impact and a sustained supply to the body. Mixes incredibly easy into milk (unlike other products on the market) and has a very low fat content (again, unlike many other products), ensuring that you only add lean muscle and not fat. One look at Powerbar's sponsored athletes such as Haile Gebrselassie or Michael Phelps and you will see that they help create great athletes. It comes in some great flavours, Lion Crisp being surprising delicious. Ask in store for other flavours, or for more details on the Powerbar range.

Nike Lunarglide +

The question everyone's asking is exactly just how revolutionary is Nike's 'revolutionary new shoe'? The Lunarglide takes up the challenge of being a suitable running shoe for a wide range of runners, adapting to different gaits to provide optimal support. No other company has attempted this difficult task before, structured trainers have a fixed, non-adaptable support level and neutral trainers have no support for bio-mechanically efficient runners. So how does this shoe bridge the gap and how successful is it in doing so? In short, Nike have done a pretty good job. Nike's dynamic support system essentially uses its incredibly lightweight lunarfoam material to create a shoe which is built up under the medial side of the shoe, giving an over-pronated foot the support it needs whilst not remaining firm enough to effect the gait of neutral of under-pronated runner. Sounds simple but is very difficult to pull off, luckily Nike have chosen the correct materials and assembled them in such a way that it actually works. Nike claim that the shoe gives the same level of support as their structure Triax trainer (moderate support). In reality this is not the case. During gait analysis they do stack up pretty well, but personally I would only treat and sell this shoe in terms of support as a mild support shoe, not quite as high as maybe Nike had aimed, but it is still a testament to what they have achieved. They ride brilliantly, thanks to the lunarfoam midsole which is soft and springy. The ride is helped by the weight of the shoe, or rather lack of it, which for a training shoe makes them feel fast. They certainly aren't a high mileage, substantial trainer; for a trainer that you can run in day in day out you will have to look else where. However, for a trainer for the faster/shorter runs, tempo or maybe for race day at a half-marathon they are ideal. They might look a touchy gimmicky with their distinctive bright green sole (pink for the ladies) but they are anything but. They won't revolutionise the running shoe industry at the minute, but they are still a great trainer which I can honestly recommend, it certainly will be interesting to see how Nike can improve on this new take on running shoes in the future, they might well be onto something good...

NRG Tech Tee

Made with lightweight dry tech fabric this tee will keep you cool and dry as the temperature creeps up. A great fit ensures you will look good from the go and feel it too with the soft to touch fabric. The stand out feature with this garment though is the high quality X-static contrast paneling which not only looks good but provides exceptional levels of breathability, with the help of a silver core fabric which transfers moisture away from the skin, keeping you cool and dry. This top has plenty to offer at a great price. Perfect for long runs in the heat or worn over a close fitting base layer as the unpredictable autumn weather approaches.

NRG Boghoppers

These versatile ¾ length tights are the perfect garment to help keep you running throughout the unpredictable British weather. Great for those cooler mornings and evenings when trying to cram a few miles in before or after work, and perfect when used as warm-up clothing before your big race or event of the year. Discreet touches of reflective piping help you to be visible and stay safe when the light is closing in and a rear zip pocket allows you to carry the essentials. Made with stretchy, breathable fabrics with lighter weight panels behind the knees and waist these have a comfortable, generous feel. Highly recommended.

Nuun Hydration Tablets

Endurance athletes often place the feelings of fatigue during longer events to running out of fuel, even when acknowledge that they have ate plenty before the event and have kept glycogen stores topped up during it. Many fail to recognize the importance of electrolytes and how easily they are lost through sweating. Electrolytes are imperative to optimal muscle and brain function, a drop in performance or even a DNF is likely to occur if this balance is upset. This is where Nuun tablets come in. These little tablets simply pop into a bottle of water and help to put back the salts that your hard work has taken out, keeping you motoring along. They come in a range of flavors, dissolve quickly into water and come in a very portable small tube, ideal for Ironman distance races for hydration on the move.

Local Runs

Jesmond Dene

The Dene is a hidden gem for runners. It is situated in the East side of Newcastle in a narrow, steep-sided valley. There are plenty of routes depending on which of the many intertwining paths you take which can take you through narrow tunnels, over old bridges, up steep climbs and past the idyllic waterway of the Ouse Burn. The Dene is a rural environment within an urban landscape and is a great retreat for many locals wishing for a bit of peace and as such is a great place to run your stress away.

Newcastle Town Moor

The town moor is a great place to run, situated just over a mile from the centre of the city. It has plenty of flat, well laid paths for a high quality speed work session. It is well lit so winter running can be accommodated. The best use of the space is a tough interval session between the many lampposts, or perhaps a hill rep session over the two 'mounds' found there. Just be careful of the cows in the warmer months, they don't like to be shifted!

Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside

The Newcastle-Gateshead quayside has seen a massive rejuvenation over recent years and is the home to a few of the region's most famous landmarks. From the infamous Tyne Bridge whereby year on year thousands of runners competing in the Great North Run run across with the Red Arrows flying overhead. To the Millenium Bridge which is situated right next to old Baltic Flour Mill now converted in a contemporary centre for art. There is plenty to see here for the local runners and riders. A casual jog along the riverside underneath the many bridges or an interval session between the landmarks, this area is perfect for a quick dinnertime run.
