Briony has been working at the Liverpool store since it opened in August 2008. A keen club runner, she has competed in many races up to half-marathon on and off road with half-marathon being her favourite distance. As she has a passion for running she loves any discussion about training, races, kit and so forth.
Alex is currently training with Lancaster University Running Club, however in the past has competed on a national level for Liverpool Harriers both in 800/1500m and also long jump.
Simon joined Up & Running in May 2010 after a year travelling in Australia. Having just run recreationally in the past, he is keen to know the more serious side of running and get a few races under his belt.
Sarah joined the team in 2010. Her favourite sports include trampolining, snowboarding, swimming and dance. She runs several miles every week for stress-busting and loves nothing more than a good stomp in the park on a stormy day!

Come in and meet the team, share news about local running, and get great advice on running and fitness in this friendly shop!

MBTs

Review by Briony ... Fancy a shoe that can improve your posture, reduce stress on knee and hip joints, increase muscle activity (for slimmer thighs girls!) and increase calorie burn? Sounds too good to be true doesn't it? These are the claims that are made by the makers of MBTs. They are referred to as the anti-shoe because they believe that traditional footwear can undermine your muscles and posture. I have owned a pair of MBTs for over a year and have probably walked in the region of 500 miles in them. I have found them extremely comfortable (despite the fact you actually need to wear a size smaller than your regular shoe size). I can definitely feel my glutes working harder (that's buttocks for the uninitiated) and although my muscle activity is increased I don't get the sensations of muscle fatigue that I can get when wearing my regular shoes during longer walks. I can also feel my abs and core working harder due to the unstable sole. This is a shoe I would recommend to anyone who spends long periods on their feet or someone who has joint pain. Despite the hefty price tag (prices start at £149) we have had many happy customers return to buy their second, third pair and so on because they love the shoe so much. Definitely a testament to the shoe!

OMM Ultra 15L Backpack

This neat bit of kit helped me through a gruelling cross-country cycle in Cambodia last year. Perfect for a hike or mountain run that requires a light weight companion with just enough space for a large water bladder and snacks! The water tight zips are a nice touch, with the top pocket being perfect for your valuables.

Asics Kayano 16

Review by Alex ...If you are after a really well cushioned, high stability shoe look no further than the Asics Kayano 16. The cushioning within the shoe is primarily generated from the large volume of gel both and the forefoot and heel of the shoe, making it versatile for a range of different running styles. A key improvement is the latest asymmetrical lacing system following the contours of your feet which improves the fit of the shoes. Once again the personal heel fit (PHF) has been adopted for the shoes allowing the shoe to mould to the shape of your foot around the ankle, where it is very important the shoe remains secure. Although the shoe is fairly expensive at £120 the additional cushioning and various technologies all add up to make a fantastic shoe worth every penny!

Local Runs

Well done to local runners Liz and Lee who decided to run a marathon a day, for 16 days, from West Kirby on the Wirral down to Cardiff, to raise money for chaity. "Our route took us along the North and Mid-Wales Coast then through the Brecon Beacons. Despite the wet weather, the many climbs and descents and the aching legs at times, we really enjoyed the challenge. We devised this challenge in order to help the young son of a friend of ours who has cerebral palsy and requires major additional support day-to-day. We are on target to raise £4000 and are very grateful to everyone who has contributed towards this. We would also like to thank Up & Running who donated several items of kit to us, which made the experience much more comfortable."
